I was contacted by Roylco and was asked to review one of the many STEM Toys they carry! I was thrilled to get the opportunity to have JDaniel and my students at school explore a set of Lock Blox. Your children are going to love exploring them too. They will love that they can turn the blocks rather than having them remain stationary.
Start By Exploring the Directions for these STEM Toys
Your children will probably start by building the creations that they feature in the directions. It will give them an idea of how the Lock Blox work together. We started by building the robot step by step following the directions. It took us no time to put it together. The directions were very easy to follow. When your children are building it, they will notice that knobs on some of the blocks will need to put back in place. The blocks do not lock into place totally. When your children see that they have shifted a little they will need to tap them slightly with a finger.
Next, Invite Your Children Create on Their Own
Once your children have tried building the creations featured on the directions, invite them to make their own creations. Some children will jump right in and start creating. You may have children that need you to help them start the building process. Below you will find six steps you can follow. They are the five steps of STEM engineering (ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve). You will notice that I have broken the creation process into two steps.
- First, you can ask them to think of an object or maybe an animal they really like.
- Second, you can ask your children to picture what that animal or object looks like.
- Third, you can help your children break what they want to create into sections.
- Fourth, you can decide which section they want to start with first.
- Fifth, you can step back and have your children finish their creations.
- Sixth, you can have them evaluate if they need to make any changes.
Using an Algorithm to Build Creations
Your children are going to notice some of the blocks need to be put in place at the beginning of the building process. The knobs that allow the blocks to twist can make them hard to connect them to other blocks. Children may have to think through what series of steps or algorithm will be the best to help them to put their creations together. First, they may need to lay the blocks out on a table in the design they want them to be. Then they can figure out which blocks will need to go together first.
If you like this STEM toy, here are some more STEM toys I have reviewed. I think your children will love them too.
Disclaimer: I was sent a box of blocks to review.
